The house is formed of three parts: a two storey element built into the curved stone boundary wall with features and scale similar to the nearby coach houses, a single storey living space with a copper roof projecting into the garden, and a flat roofed, glazed link surrounding an inner courtyard. A spiral stair is set into the curved corner of the site with a rooflight above bringing light down into the entrance hall. Although traditional building materials were used externally, the interiors are contemporary with open-plan, flexible living spaces.

Utility and WC areas were formed within the existing building, accessed from the kitchen.

Restoration, Clifton, Bristol

This large family home is an early Victorian villa located in the heart of Clifton Conservation area in Bristol. Although the building was structurally sound, the interior was outdated and the living area on the ground floor had a poor relationship with the garden. Our brief was to provide a contemporary home whilst preserving the principle features and spirit of the existing building. An Oak pergola and store, steps and pennant patio areas were incorporated into the garden layout.

The new dwellinghouse was determined by the footprint of the existing property and the topography on the site, in particular the rock face at the rear. The accommodation was turned upside down with the bedrooms at ground floor level and the living area at first floor level to take advantage of the exceptional views across the local countryside.

The existing building is a large Victorian family home, located in the Clifton Conservation area on Pembroke Road. The previous kitchen was extremely small for a house of this size. The intention was to improve the ground floor living spaces at the rear of the building and their connection to the garden, with a replacement / extended kitchen, dining room and terrace. Daylight is introduced into the depth of the plan via roof lights.

The brief was to restore and upgrade the existing house with a barn conversion to provide additional guest accommodation. High levels of insulation and energy controls were introduced to the Grade 2 listed farmhouse.  The existing double roman tiled roof together with the first floor construction has been retained and strengthened and the structure consolidated. The development preserves and enhances the character of the Westbury on Trym Conservation Area and ensures the survival of this charming listed farmhouse.
